Next to financing, networking is another crucial element of starting and operating a small business. Successful networking can lead to even more financing opportunities or new knowledge to help widen your business consulting options. Yet, few small business owners are a natural at networking and with the advent of the Internet, the entire process has changed significantly. Here are a few tips to network successfully, whether online or off.
Leave Your Calling Card
It does not matter whether you are presenting to a new client or writing a press release for distribution online. Without a calling card or contact information, that person cannot get back to you when the need for your product or service arises. Therefore, make sure that once you make contact with a prospective client or new audience that you always leave a calling card either in the form of a business card or a link back to your website.
Network Where Your Clients Are
Trade show are great if you are selling business-to-business, but if your client is someone different, then go where they congregate and do your networking there. These days that new venue may be virtual in the form of Facebook or Twitter, but it still takes some leg work to find the right demographics. Target your ideal customer and write your message to them so that they will come back and convert from visitor to buyer in no time flat.
Protect Your Public Image
Networking is only as valuable as your professional reputation. If you have a bad reputation online, no amount of networking is going to resolve that. You will have to be proactive to address any negative publicity online and off, and use public relations campaigns to win public opinion in your favor. Do not assume that just because negative comments are online that no one will see them. It is quite the opposite these days as what is written about you online creates more of an impression for people who search for your business via a search engine than being an upstanding member of your local Chamber of Commerce.
